I've got a serious itch

No not that kind of itch...
we want to wait a little while longer before baby #2

I've got a serious itch to get a dog!

So quickly backing up - I realize I'm a pretty boring blogger.  So far all I've really blogged about is Kinley

But do I really have anything interesting to say anyways?!

I have a great appreciation for friends that are witty like Louisa and Katie, or heartfelt and inspiring like Emily, Casey, and Lauren.  I do have a lot in my head, but it just doesn't seem to make it all the way to this blog.  I have a night without the hubby and thought maybe I'd share a little of what I was thinking about.

So back to the itch...

We've had a pretty interesting story when it comes to dogs in our house.

Both Trent and I love dogs and grew up with them.  We always knew we wanted to get a dog and definitely before kids.  So Trent surprised me 2 years ago with this doll

We named her Berkley and I quickly fell in love!  She was sooo sweet and cuddly, she needed me and I loved caring for her.  But Berkley was very very sick.  She was born with a very rare and hard to detect sickness (I honestly can't even remember the name of it right now).  But basically her sweet little muscular and nervous system were attacked with the disease long before we could get her the medicine and treatments she needed to get better.

So at 7 month old, we had to put her to sleep.

That was an awful awful night.

Our breeder was so wonderful to us, taking care of so many of our expenses through the process and checking in on us.  From what we can tell, he's a brother in Christ and has truly loved us well through the whole situation!  He felt terrible because Berkley did contract her sickness from her mom (but every other puppy and the mom were fine...it was just Berkley who was permanently effected).  Long story short, he wanted us to have another puppy.

At first I couldn't even think about it - we had just cared for and lost a puppy - how could we take another?  And would this happen again?!  But at the same time we knew we always wanted a dog - and we LOVED this breed (viszla's), we also knew we wanted to get a dog before kids came along and it was getting closer to when we wanted to start trying for a baby.  Trent and I were also confident that our breeder was an honest and trustworthy individual and that he had taken EVERY precaution to make sure nothing like this would happen again

Did I mention that our vet had NEVER in 30 years seen this illness in a dog?!  We even took her to A&M and they said they had read about it, but never seen it.

So with a little hesitation, but excitement, we decided we were ready to get another puppy.

Meet Landry

I know, cute right?!  We fell in LOVE with this sweet, SMART, dog.  I actually loved watching Trent with her, because Berkley honestly was never healthy, never wanted to run and play and just needed lots and LOTS of help.  Landry was completely healthy and ready to run.  I mean this girl could RUN!  Landry was such a great companion to us, she loved to cuddle with me in the morning while I spent time with the Lord, and she loved to rough house and run in the yard.  This dog LOVED frisbees, she totally had the catch-the-frisbee in your mouth thing down!  We took her to obedience classes and she literally was known as the class clown.  One day we were learning to call our dogs to us.  So I go to the end of the isle and call Landry.  She sees me and takes off towards me - runs right past and heads to the exit with myself, the instructor and several employees running after her.  She totally out-smarted us all!  She definitely knew how to make us laugh.

When she was about 5 months old we found our we were expecting Kinley. (actually that's when we decided to take her to the obedience classes!).  I was a bit nervous to have a one-year-old active puppy with a newborn, but I was also so very excited for our kiddos to grow up with their own puppy!  We knew we had work cut out for us, but we were so ready to make it work.  By the time Kinley arrived, Landry truly was so well behaved.  She had learned not to bark, not to jump and so many other things.

Here is the first time Landry and Kinley met

I'm not kidding, Landry came up to her, smelled her precious little toes and then laid down at my feet.  She knew Kinley was something special!  In Kinley's first week home, Landry spent lots of time cuddled up on the couch next to me and as close to Kinley as possible!

Then we lost Landry.

There was no way we could have known, but Landry had an extremely rare condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  Its a condition where the walls of your heart expand to the point where they just can't pump blood anymore.

And guess what - our vet had only seen it 3 times in 30 years!  (and this wasn't the same vet as the first time)

There's lots more about Landry here in case you want to read.

What a mix of emotions we felt.  I was literally less than 2 weeks out from giving birth - which means my emotions were already crazy, we were learning how to be parents for the first time, and grieving a very sad loss.  We let the breeder know (which by the way, Landry's disease was NO fault of the breeders, the parents of Landry...it was just totally random).  The breeder just felt terrible.  Here he had given us this puppy that ended up being another tragedy for us.

I don't mean to be over-dramatic...we had a great year with Landry, we had just hoped for many more!

Now with a newborn, we know we are in NO position to get a puppy anytime soon.  But it doesn't stop this itch from coming back!  At times, I start weighing the pro's and con's of getting a dog.  And when exactly we should get a dog.  In between Kinley and the next baby?  Once we're all done with kids?  It seems the second is probably more wise, but I just hate the thought of waiting several more years!  But I can't help but think with 2 very rare dog situations, maybe we're just not supposed to have a dog right now.

Any thoughts?

7 months!

Seriously....time. is. flying!

Our little lady is doing great!  Happy 7 months Kinley!

Some updates:

1)  Food - She's now eating in the morning and at night...sometimes with a little food in the middle of the day too.  Here's her menu:  barley, sweet potatoes (loves), avocados (loves), peas, green beans, apples, pears, bananas, and we're about to start butternut squash!  I'm making all her food (except I cheated and bought the pears...I never seem to pick out juicy pears for myself, so I was worried they wouldn't turn out).  Funniest thing about the food, she absolutely HATES fruits so far!  But loves her veggies.  I literally have to disquise the fruits in with veggies.  I find myself making weird meals like apples and peas mixed together, or bananas and sweet potatoes.
2)  Babbling!  Kinley says lots of bababababababa and mamamamamama....she actually cried out "Mama" when she got her 6 month shots...YEA!!!  Of course I don't think she knows what she said, but I'll let it count anyway - FIRST WORD:  MAMA!
3)  This girl is BUSY...she's rolling all over the place, wants to put everything in her mouth, loves to scream (for fun), listen to herself yell out, laugh, watch herself in the mirror, and finds GREAT pleasure in finding me and Trent.  I love watching her reaction to each of us.  Melts my heart!
4)  Swimming - Kinley loves to be in the water!  She splashes tons and doesn't care one bit when the water gets in her eyes.
5)  Reaching - She has just started to lift her hands in the air for me to pick her up.  Literally I didn't know my heart could melt anymore...but it has!
6)  Hide and Seek - We'll put a cloth over her head and she loves to pull it down and give us a HUGE grin with her 2 little teeth.
7)  Shy?? - I'm beginning to think Kinley might be shy!  When we're at home or with people she's familiar with, she talks up a storm, yells, does her screaming deal, and smiles tons!  But when we go to church or to a friends house, she's quiet as a mouse - doesn't smile as much and just watches things.  Is this a little shy personality coming out??  Who knows!
8) New obsession - balloons!  Kinley LOVES balloons.  We were over at our friends house a couple weeks ago and their boys had some balloons.  Kinley's eyes just lit up and she so badly wanted to hold on to one!  Then a few days later, we went to a one-year old birthday party for our friend Chloe.  (You can read more from her amazing mom here).  No kidding, there were 200 helium balloons on the ceiling.  I literally couldn't get Kinley to stop starring at the ceiling!  So I went and bought a pack of balloons and we've had a blast playing with them (yes, I know they are dangerous - but I'm right with her the whole time!).

Ok, enough of my rambling and writing things down before I forget them = )  PICTURES!

This is literally the face she makes the entire time we play with the balloon!
If it's possible I've fallen more in love with this little lady in the past month!

Kinley loves a thrill!

Is it weird that my daughter LOVES to be scared?!

Anytime I hide from her and jump from around the corner she lights up and usually I can get a pretty good giggle out of her.  Last weekend my parents were in town and we got a great video of her being "scared".  What you don't see is me hiding around the corner and jumping out each time (and looking like an idiot in the process I'm sure).  The last time my dad decided to jump out from the other corner too and she was actually quite shocked.

6 Months Old

Hard to believe my little baby is half-a-year old!!!  (And honestly not that "little" anymore either!)

Here's a few updates in the last month:

We had a LOT of "firsts" this month!

4/22 - 1st Fever: 102.2 = (  A quick trip to the doctor and found out she just had a cold
4/24 - 1st Easter!!!  All the Thompsons came to town, Gram, Papa Jack, Aunt Linde and the dogs too!
4/27 - Cut 1st and 2nd tooth!....thinking that may explain the fever!!
4/27 - Sat up on her own!
5/13 - Started solid foods - Barley cereal
5/20 - 6 month well check...drumroll.....
Weight:  17 lbs 5 oz (75th percentile)
Height: 28 inches (95th percentile)...she's literally OFF the charts!

Kinley is at such a fun age right now!  She smiles all the time, especially at Trent and me (MELT. MY. HEART!).  She really loves toys now and puts absolutely EVERYTHING in her mouth, I mean everything.  Once she cut her teeth, we learned that this lady has a serious bit!  Not sure how to explain "no!" to her, but I'm in some serious pain when she gets a hold of my thumb = ).  Sleeping is still a challenge, but nothing unbearable!  Eating is a blast - she's a total mess, but LOVES to eat.  So far we've done barley cereal, sweet potatoes, and avocado and she loves it all!

Here's some pics!

Her first taste of Avocados!

Everyone should own boots...

I almost waited too long to try these boots on Kinley...they are still too big for her feet, but her precious legs just BARELY fit!

Aren't these legs just PRECIOUS!!!

5 Months Old!

Yes, I recognize that Kinley is now actually 5 1/2 months old, but I wanted to keep track of Kinley's growth and progress as of 5 months!

This was a busy month with our Spring Break trip!  Here's a couple highlights:

*3/16 - Standing up without assistance.  It's so cute, any time I pull her from lying down to sitting up, she straightens her legs and pops up to a standing position!

*Kinley loves to hear herself babble.  Especially when we're in the car, she'll stare out the window and make such precious noises.  Here's a little peak at her "talking" (p.s. Trent is driving, I'm in the passenger seat filming!)

*4/11 - Kinley stopped being swaddled.  Since Kinley was born, we've been using the miracle blanket...this thing is truly a miracle!!!

(Side Note: I've avoided talking at all about sleep on the blog because isn't it one of those things you DON'T discuss?!  Especially if you have a good sleeper?  Well I'm risking doing a bad thing by talking about it...the truth is, I have had a great sleeper!  But without the miracle blanket, this little lady is giving us a run for our money, so I'll share = )

So with the miracle blanket, Kinley was a ridiculous sleeper.  Literally we'd wrap her up, give her a kiss and she'd fall asleep.  For naptimes, at nighttime, after middle of the night feedings...she was a breeze.  But in the last month there were more and more nights where Kinley would break out of the swaddle.  So we decided to quit swaddling cold turkey!  Sleep has been quite the different story since then, some great days, some days of crying, some days of crying through her whole naps, and some nights of 2 hours to get her to bed (like tonight!), lots of reading and trying different sleep-training strategies, and lots of second guessing myself.  It seems like the nap schedules are all wacky now, and whether or not she'll go down quickly at night is anyone's guess.  I've also got the hunch that she's beginning to understand what to do to get my attention (like screaming her head off).  Basically, good sleep is still a work in progress!

Here's some pictures of Kinley at 5 months:

A Thankful Heart

This is the Gift I received today....

Seriously God?!  You bless me in the midst of my doubt!

Let me back up and explain...

Thanks to many showers and many sweet friends, we were stocked with diapers for quite a while, I'm so thankful for that because on our tight budget, we hadn't exactly found a way to budget in diapers and they can be expensive!  I literally had purchased one small package of newborn diapers shortly after Kinley was born, but other than that we had been set for quite some time.

It must have been about a month-and-a-half ago that I was literally on my LAST diaper.  That morning Kinley and I planned to spend time with a little playgroup consisting of 3 other new moms and then we were going to head to the store to purchase our first big stash.  While spending time with these amazing moms, one mentioned she had a stash of #2 diapers she coudn't use and offered them to me...wow, God provided literally at the exact right moment!

But should I really be surprised?

Fast forward a bit.  We've now bought a couple small packages of diapers and have managed to just take it out of our grocery budget.  Not a huge deal, but I find that when money gets tight, I get stressed and seem to want to hold even tighter to what we do have.

I find myself thinking how luxurious it would be not to have to worry about how to stretch money, or get to buy a grocery item that isn't necessary, like maybe some fancy cheese, the healthy cereal that costs $1 more than everything else, or maybe a bottle of wine!  I sometimes will even throw myself a little stress pity party...how gross is that?!  I believe these things will fill me in some small way, or satisfy just a bit.  Oh my sinful heart!  It's in these moments that I realize I'm not truly believing that Christ alone is enough.  God allows these situations because they are actually opportunities to PRAISE HIM and TRUST HIM as the great provider.  So I'm missing the WHOLE point when I look inward, hold tighter and allow stress to overtake my thoughts.

This brings us up to last night.  Trent went out and purchased a big box of #2 diapers because we were down to our final few diapers, and I had him just pull money from our grocery budget.  I knew we'd just have to find some way to make our grocery money stretch...maybe a few cereal dinners or something.

This morning Kinley and I are hanging out with this same mom's group and ANOTHER one of the moms mentions as we're leaving....

"Hey, I've got a bunch of #2 Diapers I'd love to give to you"

Isn't God good?!  He is our great provider.  Always.  In different and creative ways.  And always in ways that should bring the focus of our praise back to Him.

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.  Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them.  Of how much more value are you than the birds!"  Luke 12:22-24
